Excellence Indulged Here

April 3, 2012 By Cathy Miller 10 Comments

A while back I applied for a writing assignment with a well-know writer creating a new company.

I didn’t get the gig. But, I loved his approach to screening candidates. He asked us to explain why we thought we were excellent writers.

  • I never really thought about it
  • It sounds so egotistical
  • But, if you don’t believe, who will?

If you would indulge my self-centered moment, I thought I’d share my response.

Why I Write

Writing is a passion. When writing for a client or penning just for me, I coax the passion into each word, inviting others to join me in the journey. It’s a shared journey and I am the guide to its destination.

The journey is never the same and those we encounter along the way bring a fresh perspective to the path we take. It’s that uniqueness that inspires me and challenges me to never take my writing for granted.

I cherish the expression and am thankful for the joy it brings. I have always had a fascination with words and their power to move in ways we have yet to explore. There is a comfort when we succeed and an urgency to try again when we stumble.

Passion defines us. Combining my skills with the words and passion of others is another route to our destination. It’s an offered hand to a place we have not been.

Is there anything more exhilarating than sharing a passion?

It’s what drives me to be a better writer.

My own journey to writing was a circuitous route. But, I believe in the adage that everything happens for a reason. Life experiences make me the writer I am today.

And for that I am thankful.

End of Indulgence

What is your passion? What makes you excellent?

Go ahead – indulge yourself.

Cathy, you’re one of the best writers I know. Tight, skilled writing is what I think when I read your words. Nuff said!

There’s nothing like a good reminder of why we write in the first place. Needed to read this. Thanks for inspiring me Cathy! =)
