Holiday Lull is the Comforter Around a Year Gone By

December 29, 2011 By Cathy Miller 13 Comments

If the holiday lull had a sound it would be the muffled sound of distraction.

We’re on the cusp of a New Year and we’ve broken away from the norm.

  • There’s the aftermath of a holiday rush
  • And time away from work

We turn to the once busy sound of the internet only to find it snuggled in its warm winter bed.

So, we try the mundane, the tasks we put off. But, it does not work as we tuck the comforter around the closing year. It happens every year.

It’s our time of indulgence and reflection.

In this small window of time, we enjoy the simple things in life.

  • Family and friends
  • The joy of giving
  • The happiness we receive

The time when we just breathe.

We’ll stretch out the kinks and lift up the blinds.

But, for now, we’ll just nestle and dream.

Happy New Year!

    Hi Cathy!

Thanks for inviting me back to your Blog…from The Blogging
    Mastermind Comment Tribe’s page. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s so nice to see ALL of the holiday commercials finally winding
down, too bad Christmas has become so ‘over the top’ in the
retail world’s eyes. If it only were simpler & not so hyped up, that
    would be so cool now.

Wishing you a very prosperous 2012!!

Have a highly inspired day…your tribal friend Steven Suchar

Hey Cathy, we finally have fog instead of Santa Ana conditions… I love the look and the silence, and the dripping sound of fog.

It’s confirming the lull… so is not turning on even a radio for an hour or so and just being with the almost silence.

    Love you,
    A

Fog can be comforter-inducing. You just want to snuggle in. Thank you for your support and friendship, Anne. It is warmly received and reciprocated.
Love & hugs back at you!

Wow, Cathy, what a perfect description. I was just telling my friend in an email that it would be nice to continue this stress-free schedule into the new year. Yet, that would be delusional, no? Much like refusing to leave a port of call on the final leg of a cruise.

When you describe it like this, I do feel a sense of just curling up under the covers a little bit longer, leaving the comments and emails for another day…

Ha. That actually what I did. Such indulgence comes with a price – unless we also use the lull to reflect. To ponder not only the promise of the new year, but also the enervating actions of the waning calendar.

If we don’t do this, the price is a mad rush to “catch-up”, to resolve to run faster in treadmills of our own making.

The 2011 me would have taken this comment and fleshed it out into a full-fledged post. That person has peeped from comforter with a new perspective: it’s enough to share my thoughts with friends in the context of a visit to blog posts and chatty email (which my friend and I do, everyday LOL.)

Bottom line, if a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the value of painting more, writing less and conveying a stronger message.

    Yes, silence is indeed golden.

    Happy New Year, Cathy!

    Cheers,

    Mitch

Mitch-you are a master of eloquence. I just love your outlook. I agree there is comfort in snuggling a bit longer and indulgence is perfectly okay, but, you’re right, it is a great time for reflection. Perhaps if we remember the good feelings that come with the lull and learn how to pepper that in for a balanced 2012, we will have truly profited.

Thanks for sharing your thoughtful perspective, Mitch, and I hope 2012 is all you want and more!

This is so true! I have spent the last seven days running every errand I have ignored for the past six months, spending time with family, and reading a novel from cover to cover. But having so much time off does allow me to think so much more clearly about my life, where it is going, and what I need to change! Happy new year to you.

Hi Kristen: It does seem to be the pattern for this time of year, doesn’t it? Happy New Year to you, too, Kristen!
