Is Your Pickle Sweet or Sour?

July 26, 2012 By Cathy Miller 6 Comments

You probably don’t think inspiration when you look at a pickle.

Yet, two different stories with a pickle theme provided just that – inspiration.

  • The first was a story about customer service
  • The second was about trust and betrayal

Pickles and life lessons? Inspiration really is everywhere.

Customer Service

You can read the stories that provided the pickle juice for this post through the above links. But, I’ll give you some highlights.

The first pickle story came from Bob Farrell, the founder of Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour restaurant.

It became a signature speech on customer service. Out of the blue, a waitress at one of his restaurants told a long-time customer there would be a charge for “extra pickles.”

  • The customer always ordered extra pickles
  • The restaurant never added a charge for extra pickles

Mr. Farrell turned that story into a rallying cry of “Give ’em the pickles.”

We get so hung up on power and control.

  • We forget it’s just extra pickles
  • The rewards far outweigh the cost
  • The power is in giving them the extra pickles

Trust and Betrayal

Tea Silvestre has a fabulous brand as the Word Chef.

If you’ve read my blogs at all, you know how I love food analogies. What that says about me is a post for another day.

Tea’s pickle story delivers great lessons.

  • The pickles are the business ones we get into
  • They come from trust and betrayal
  • You can choose to learn and move on
  • Or get stuck in the pickle jar

Life’s Accompaniment

Isn’t it interesting how inspiration works?

  • We choose how we serve it up
  • And view it for what it is

Well, that’s hard to say. I love dill pickles, but I suspect my pickles, in general, are sweet. I’ve been pickled, been in pickles, eaten pickles…. and my daughter’s nickname since infancy is… Pickles. She’s sweet. Except when she’s crabby. Then she’s sour. ๐Ÿ™‚

Inspiration is fascinating… worked the better part of two days on a video that wouldn’t display properly… while driving to coffee with friends I wondered if I uploaded it to youtube and embedded it from there… and it worked like a charm.

I like pickles in my egg and potato salad… and I identify with every single thing Lori said ๐Ÿ˜‰

Love it when a plan comes together, Anne. ๐Ÿ™‚ Are you going to battle Lori for that Pickle Authority crown? ๐Ÿ™‚
